A brownfield is a property, or the reuse or redevelopment of a property, which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. There are an estimated 450,000 brownfields in the U.S. The cleaning up of these properties can benefit a community in many ways, including:

  • Increasing local tax bases
  • Facilitating job growth
  • Utilizing existing infrastructure
  • Improving and protecting the environment
