ISO 14001 EMS Manual

In assisting companies in attaining ISO 14001 certification I am often asked about guidance in preparing an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) Manual.  The ISO 14001 standard does not include specifications for an ISO 14001 EMS Manual as the standard does not require an EMS manual be developed.  However, the majority of companies achieving ISO 14001 certification develop an EMS Manual.  Some of the documentation that may be included in an EMS Manual could include:
  • Personnel responsibilities
  • Communication Practices
  • Document control
  • Procedural documents (i.e., work instructions or standard operating procedures)
  • Documentation of how objectives and targets are set
  • Methods for measuring and monitoring its environmental impacts
  • Practices for identifying nonconformance and for implementing corrective and preventive actions.
