When I initially begin discussing ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) program development with clients one question that almost always comes up is "What is a gap analysis?" In order to provide a foundation for everyone's understanding of a gap analysis let's look at the definition of "gap." I have chosen the fourth definition listed in Webster's New World Dictionary and Thesaurus", a lag or disparity. In performing a gap analysis of an Environmental Management System as part of attaining ISO 14001 certification, you are determining the difference (i.e., what is disparate or not equal - the gap) between the components of your Environmental Management System and each specification of the ISO 14001 standard.
The gap analysis is typically done as an initial review of the Environmental Management System when an organization is first considering pursuing ISO 14001 certification. However, if the Environmental Management System is not fully developed, implemented, maintained or was not developed in accordance with the ISO 14001 standard an organization may consider conducting the gap analysis after some initial ISO 14001 EMS development efforts have been completed. If you are considering ISO 14001 EMS development and want to learn more about conducting a gap analysis call me at 717.399.9587.
