Hazardous Waste

Hazardous waste is a waste with properties that make it dangerous or potentially harmful to human health or the environment. In regulatory terms, a RCRA hazardous wastes fall into two categories:

Listed Wastes, which appear on one of the four hazardous wastes lists established by EPA regulations:
  1. The F-list (non-specific source wastes), which can be found in the regulations at 40 CFR §261.31.
  2. The K-list (source-specific wastes), which can be found in the regulations at 40 CFR §261.32.
  3. The P-list and the U-list (discarded commercial chemical products), which can be found in the regulations at 40 CFR §261.33.

Characteristic wastes, which exhibit one or more of four characteristics defined in 40 CFR Part 261 Subpart C:
  1. Ignitability, as described in 40 CFR §261.21.
  2. Corrosivity, as described in 40 CFR §261.22.
  3. Reactivity, as described in 40 CFR §261.23.
  4. Toxicity, as described in 40 CFR §261.24.
