Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous material that was widely used due to its resistance to heat and chemicals. Because of these properties, it has been used in the manufacturing of a variety of building materials including, but not limited to: insulation, roofing shingles, drywall, ceiling & floor tiles, mastics and so on.
In the past, asbestos has been used in a wide variety of building construction materials due to its insulating and fireproofing properties. In 1975, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) promulgated a three-stage ban to prohibit the future use of asbestos-containing Materials (ACMs) in buildings. For more information on ACMs, check out the EPA information page.
