EPA Revising Underground Storage Tank Regulations

Tuesday, December 27, 2011 by Cassie Anderson
US EPA recently announced rulemaking to revise the 1988 underground storage tank (UST) regulations at 40 CFR part 280, which include: adding secondary containment requirements for new and replaced tanks, piping, and dispensers; adding operator training requirements; adding periodic operation and maintenance requirements for UST systems, including monthly walkthroughs; removing certain deferrals, including those at airports; adding new release prevention and detection technologies; updating codes of practice; making editorial and technical corrections; and updating state program approval requirements to incorporate these new changes.

The EPA is accepting comments on these changes until February 16, 2012. For more information on these proposed revisions, check out www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2011-11-18/html/2011-29293.htm
