Mandatory Reporting of GHG Rule: Part Seven

Wednesday, February 3, 2010 by August Mack Environmental, Inc.

The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Mandatory Reporting of Greenhouse Gases GHG) Rule is now in affect (as of January 1, 2010). The purpose of this posting is to review where you should be in terms of compliance.

  • Have you completed a GHG emissions inventory?  Remember the Mandatory Reporting Rule is based on actual emissions.
  • Did you implement your GHG emissions tracking program on or before January 1, 2010?
  • Have you installed any necessary fuel monitoring or flow metering devices required to determine actual emissions? The deadline to install such devices is March 31, 2010 and the time frame to request an extension has already expired as of January 28th.
  • Have you prepared your GHG Monitoring Plan? The deadline to complete is April 1, 2010.
The first step is completing the GHG emissions inventory. This is a low-cost item (often less than $2,500) that can be completed in less than a week. Once the emissions inventory is complete, it is a simple matter to begin tracking emissions, develop your GHG Monitoring Plan and identify where additional monitoring equipment may be needed.
